Rivers Election Re-Run: NYSC considers a review of Corps Members’ Participation in Future Elections

NYSC

The National Youth Service Corps has threatened to review the Memorandum of Understanding, MOU, signed with the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, on the participation of corps members in electoral process.
NYSC Director General, Brig-Gen. Johnson Olawumi, made this revelation when the Minister of Youth and Sports, Solomon Dalung, and INEC Chairman, Professor Mahmud Yakubu, paid a condolence visit to the NYSC in Abuja, over the death of Samuel Okonta, a corps member who was killed by gunmen in Rivers State during the rerun elections.
While promising that the scheme would do everything in its power to bring Okonta’s killers to justice, he confirmed that NYSC had set up a committee to look into the corps member’s killing after which the committee would determine whether or not the MOU would be reviewed.
He said, “I want to use this avenue to call on the Rivers State government and community leaders to do everything humanly possible to bring those who killed this young, innocent man to book. We shall work with relevant agencies to ensure that the perpetrators of this heinous act are fished out and made to face the full wrath of the law.”
Samuel Okonta was one of many corps members whose lives were lost at electoral polls.
According to reports from Vanguard, 11 corps members were killed in Rivers State during the 2011 elections and about 150 others had their limbs cut off in Kaduna State by protesters against the outcome of the polls. Some other corps members also went missing last weekend during the Rivers State elections.

Nigerian doctors in US list conditions to relocate home

Nigerian doctors in US list conditions to relocate home

Nigerian medical practitioners based in the United States of America on Tuesday said they were determined  to relocate to the country if the Federal Government could provide  incentives for them.

Three United States-based Nigerian doctors who were among the 24-member medical team that successfully separated a set of female siamese twins recently at a hospital in Texas, United States.

The doctors, led by their National President, Nkem Chukwumerije under the aegis of the Association of Nigerian Physicians in the Americas, stated this in Abuja when their executive officers paid a courtesy call on the Chairman,  Senate Committee on Health,  Senator Lanre Tejuosho,  at the National Assembly complex.

The ANPA members said they were interested in  returning home to help  their fatherland but
lamented the  government had not done  enough to encourage them.

Chukwumerije listed   poor remuneration, inadequate modern equipment  and a  lack of low interest loans for those who want to set up medical facilities in Nigeria as some of the impediments to their homecoming.

Punch reports that he said:
“The major barrier preventing the relocation of medical doctors back to Nigeria is incentive. Every human character and behaviour is linked to incentives. Some of the incentives to get back the medical doctors abroad to Nigeria are not in place.
“Most of us here love our country and our hearts are in Nigeria but we just have to be physically at another country. We  are very passionate about improving health care system here but the incentives, especially remuneration sends people out and force them to remain abroad.
“Another thing is a lack of proper equipment to work with. Most people abroad honestly want to come back. But to physically relocate,  we will need the right financial incentives.
“The Federal Government should provide low interest loans for health care workers so that medical practitioners abroad could bring their money and have access to low interest loans.”

BREAKING: Brussels Under Attack! Many Dead As 'Suicide Bomb Attacks' Rock Airport And Train Station During Rush Hour (Photos)

BREAKING: Brussels Under Attack! Many Dead As 'Suicide Bomb Attacks' Rock Airport And Train Station During Rush Hour (Photos)

Brussels, the capital city of Belgium is on total lockdown after at least 23 people have been killed and several injured following suicide bombers terrorist attacks. Two explosions rocked the city’s main international airport, and a third in a subway station at the heart of the city.

According to news agencies, 13 people were killed at the airport, and 15 in the subway bombing, while 30 others were wounded. Prime Minister Charles Michel of Belgium said there were “numerous” dead. “We were fearing terrorist attacks, and that has now happened,” he said.

At least 13 reportedly died, possibly including the attackers, after two suicide bombs rocked Brussels Zaventem airport just after 8am this morning.

At least 35 are thought to be seriously injured with hundreds of "walking wounded" after the series of blasts.

The France-Belgium border has been closed following the wave of attacks this morning.

Police are describing the horrifying events as terror attacks.

French Police have said they will deploy 1,600 additional police officers at borders and on transport.

Witnesses reported seeing "dismembered bodies everywhere" and heard shots fired and shouting in Arabic before the two airport blasts.

Samir Derrouich, who works at a restaurant in Brussels airport, said: "The two explosions were almost simultaneous. They were both at check in desk. One was close to the Starbucks. It was awful. There was just blood. It was like the apocalypse."

Fire fighters who entered the blast-hit building are understood to have found a third unexploded device.

As they evacuated people from the airport, terror cops confiscated hand luggage from holidaymakers and they checked for further explosives.

All travel including metro stations, Eurostar, rail stations and flights have been cancelled as the city goes into total lockdown this morning.

Authorities are warning people to stay away, stay indoors and away from crowded areas amid the terror in Brussels.

Belgian MP Georges Dallemagne had just dropped his wife off at the airport when she heard the ‘massive explosions’ and the roof caved in.

He said: "I dropped her off around 7.40am this morning, and she called me to say that there were explosions around 7.58am.

"She ran away immediately, in a state of shock, towards the Sheraton Hotel. Then she returned to pick up her baggage, realising that the danger in this zone had passed.

"It was then that she saw broken windows, victims leaving the airport, the elderly put on stretchers, and the emergency services arriving.

"She saw a part of the ceiling had collapsed. She said the two explosions were around the departure hall."

Earlier a bomb disposal unit was spotted racing towards the European Union building in the heart of the city.

It is not clear whether the vehicle was responding to a specific threat.

It has been reported one of the explosions centred around the American Airlines desk in the departure lounge in Zaventem airport.

Another blast is thought to have taken place on the road leading up to departures.

All metro stations have been closed in the city following the attacks during this morning's rush hour.

Eurostar sources say the service is still running normally but it is likely that the whole Brussels public transport network is likely to be closed.

Witnesses described “feeling the shockwaves” of the blasts as the explosions ripped through the airport and said dismembered bodies and blood were strewn across the floor.
